What does ‘Pentecostal’ mean?

What does Pentecostal Mean?

As in our name ‘Elim Pentecostal Church’, so, what does Elim Pentecostal mean?

Elim’ is a place mentioned in Exodus 15:27 “Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.”This name Elim was used to show a place of refreshing and replenishment for people to attend.

Pentecostal

Pentecostals include Christians who believe that the “manifestations of the Holy Spirit” are alive, available, and experienced by modern-day Christians.

These manifestations or gifts of the Holy Spirit were seen in the first century Christian believers (Acts 2:4; 1 Corinthians 12:4-10; 1 Corinthians 12:28) and include signs and wonders such as the messages of wisdom, prophecy, knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, miraculous powers, discerning of spirits, tongues and interpretation of tongues. The term Pentecostal, therefore, comes from the New Testament experiences of the early Christian believers on the Day of Pentecost. Pentecostals believe in the “Baptism in the Holy Spirit”, a secondary experience of a filling of Power from the Holy Spirit.

Some Christians do not believe the gifts of the Holy Spirit are to be used today, feeling they were only for the day of the Apostles. This however cannot be found in the Bible.

Who is the Power of the Holy Spirit for?

Acts 1:8“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

In this passage Jesus is explaining that the Holy Spirit is for everyone where ever they live, this is distance! (That means we are included in this.)

Acts 2:38-39 “Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

In this passage Peter is explaining that the Holy Spirit is for everyone through the Generations, This is generational! (That means we are included in this.)

This means the power of the Holy Spirit including the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are for us today. Our Foundational truths can be found on the back of this leaflet.

What can I expect in a service?

Pentecostal worship is often characterised by a lively expression of worship, at times emotions show through the worship. Sometimes there may be a message in Tongues or another gift of the Holy Spirit used. We sometimes pray for healing for those that are unwell. This is normally followed by Communion and a Message/Sermon based directly on Biblical truth.

“Pentecostal” Christians may sometimes be described as “Charismatic.” Some other examples of Pentecostal denominations are Assemblies of God, Church of God and Apostolic Churches, although Elim is one of the most well-known.
